Thank you for your interest in becoming a Trustee at St John of God Hospitaller Services (SJOG).
SJOG supports people to live the lives they choose, believing that with the right support every person can achieve their potential.
We exist to meet unmet need in a changing society and our diverse services range from supported living to homelessness services to supporting victims of trafficking and modern slavery.
Our heritage stretches back nearly 140 years, but our roots are even older, based upon the legacy of our founder Saint John of God who lived more than 500 years ago. We deliver our purpose through values that mirror those of Saint John of God – compassion, hospitality, justice, respect and trust.
We are in a time of transition and transformation. Having faced financial challenges in recent years, our new Chief Executive joined us last year, and has established a new leadership team. We are now in a position to develop a more responsive and efficient charity, and our board will work with our leadership team to shape our future together. While we have an immediate focus on stabilising where we are, we are in a good place to build for the future and our mission enables us to develop innovative and creative opportunities to meet unmet need where we find it.
We are now looking to find two trustees who can support and stretch the delivery of our services and who will support and challenge the strategic development of the organisation. We’re looking for a trustee with strong commercial acumen (which may have been gained in business, charities or the public sector), and for a trustee with expertise in quality and safeguarding within health or social care.
If you accept and share our values and are excited by the opportunity to support our transformation, please read on.
Chair of Trustees
Our purpose is to provide people with the skills and the support to gain control of their own lives.
We believe in the potential of people...
SJOG believes that every person has intrinsic worth and inherent dignity, and that with the right support each and every person can achieve their potential.
We don’t have one standard approach but creatively provide help and support to people in the way they want.
We continue to be inspired by the story of our founder, Saint John of God, who left us a legacy of providing value-based service to those most in need.
We provide services to people in need through the provision of tailored social care. We work with people with learning disabilities, people with complex physical impairments, and people who are homeless including those who have been subject to modern day slavery.
We are ambitious and look to be better at meeting the needs of the people that we serve tomorrow than we are today.
We believe that every person has the right to be supported in a way that does not degrade their dignity...
We are part of an international family of 500,000 colleagues, working in 500 centres of care in 50 countries, and impacting on over 7 million lives every year.
In Italy the order is known as the Fatebenefratelli or the ‘do good’ brothers, and we remain inspired by our founder’s example to ‘do good’.
In the UK we are a registered charity based in Darlington, that has stabilised under a new Chief Executive and management team after a contraction in the services provided.
Delivering £15 million of services, we are a national charity with the potential to grow and a positive future ahead of us that builds on our 500 year legacy.
Our values encompass a real inclusiveness and convey a clear message to anyone who comes into contact with SJOG:
Hospitality - is offering a welcome to those in any kind of need. Every day, we say ‘come in, you are very welcome’ and every day we are inspired by the strength, humanity and hospitality of the people that we work alongside.
Compassion - the support that we offer is underpinned by the active gift of kindness, caring and a demonstration of being willing to help.
Justice - we believe that every person belongs to the same human family and so we respond to, defend and promote the rights of all.
Respect - we respect the dignity of each person, to choose how they live and our support and care does not degrade a person’s inherent dignity.
Trust - our mutual need for one another demands that we always seek to promote confidence, we do what we say.
The governing body of the charity is the board of trustees...
Our trustees make sure the charity is running well and doing what it was set up to do particularly in relation to charity and company law.
The trustees meet formally as a board four times a year, with additional committee work. We’re looking for two new trustees: one to lead the committee that focuses on service quality, and the other on finance matters.
The Chair of Trustees is the Provincial of the Hospitaller Order of St John of God, Western European province. Donatus Forkan has been a brother of the order for nearly 60 years, is a qualified psychiatric nurse.
The board consists of Brothers of the Order and Lay Trustees but lacks diversity, and we would like to address this during this recruitment process.

Unremunerated but reasonable expenses will be paid
SJOG exists to meet unmet need in a changing society. We are ambitious to fulfil the potential of people and give them the skills and the support to gain control of their own lives. We don’t have one standard approach but creatively provide help and support to people in the way they want. We continue to be inspired by the story of our founder, Saint John of God, who left us a legacy of providing value-based service to those most in need.
With a turnover of £15m, we are a national charity with 600 staff working across the country, working with people with learning disabilities, complex physical impairments, and people who are homeless including victims of trafficking. We’re part of an international organisation that touches the lives of a million people every day.
SJOG is undergoing transformation. In recent years we have faced financial challenges, like other social care organisations, but with a new Chief Executive and leadership team we are now ready to shape our future and develop new ways of delivering on our purpose.
We have a dedicated board, which we are now looking to strengthen with two Trustees who can support and stretch the delivery of our services and who will support and challenge the strategic development of the organisation. In particular, we are looking for individuals with the following experience: senior strategic leadership experience, strong business/commercial acumen (gained in business, charities or the public sector) and expertise in quality and safeguarding within health or social care. We are looking for strategic individuals, with independent judgement and the ability to think creatively, who share our values of hospitality, compassion, justice, respect and trust.
SJOG is fully committed to equality of opportunity and diversity to ensure that we reflect the full breadth of the people we aim to support. We warmly welcome applications from all suitably-qualified candidates.
