Welcome from Lee Willows - Chief Executive, Mike Wojcik - Chair of YGAM
and Ayub Khan - Chair of YGAM Innovation

Hello and welcome to the Young Gamblers Education Trust (known as YGAM) and our trading subsidiary YGAM Innovation Limited We are delighted you have come to this page to view the opportunities we have available to get involved with YGAM.

YGAM is the UK’s only charity dedicated to informing, educating and safeguarding young people against problem gambling and gaming we are already tackling an important issue as the profile of both is beginning to be raised nationally.

Incorporated in June 2015 and led by the Responsible Gambling Strategy Board (RGSB), National Responsible Gambling Strategy, YGAM has developed rapidly from a start-up charity to one with firm foundations and an excellent reputation for the quality and rigour of its educational programmes and its collaborative working.  YGAM already punches above its weight, led by a dedicated, entrepreneurial and thoughtful board of Trustees and executive team.

The charity was founded by a small team of people who have powerful stories to tell of the impact of gambling, including Lee Willows our chief executive, who struggled with gambling in his late-thirties; Adrian Sladdin our Education Advisor and Anne and Keith Evans. Anne’s son tragically took his life following his struggles with gambling seven years ago. They and others who have become involved with YGAM over our first four years, have been absolutely committed to working to prevent their stories being repeated in the lives of others. The growth of gaming and the growing awareness of the risks and impact this too can bring have convinced us that this needs to be an equally important area of our work and two years ago we have started embedding it as a core part of our educational offer.

Working with Peridot Partners in 2017, we completed a strategic review of board membership and earlier this year we started to refocus the skills of our Trustee Board as we moved from start up to a charity delivering high quality education programmes, ready to grow into its next stage. Earlier this year we established YGAM Innovation Limited, the trading company supporting YGAM’s work. We are now keen to further extend the skills mix and talents of the board of Trustees and the trading company Board to support YGAM as it implements its new national strategy and realise its full potential.

YGAM’s growth has been impressive. Over the past three-years the charity has grown from an idea on a sheet of paper, to securing over £1.2m in funding; employing talented team of staff and specialists; supporting 800+ organisations to deliver its education programme; developed the UK’s first fully externally accredited, quality-assured and evaluated education programme and has formally partnered with three universities to develop its new Peer Education programme. In the coming year we aim to achieve a £1m combined turnover; deliver our education programme to a further c1000~ organisations and partner with at least six universities. In addition, we will be working with partners to develop the charity’s trading arm and scale delivery of our new externally accredited qualification on responsible gambling for those whom work in the gambling industry and support the development of a gambling industry Trailblazers apprenticeship group.

It is in this context of high impact and growth that we are seeking to recruit professional expertise to our new Trading Company Board, including a commercially astute Chair with experience of the gambling or gaming sectors. We are also seeking to enhance the skills and capacity of our Charity Board further with independent appointments.

We hope the information on this website will help you understand more about YGAM, its work and its vision, and inspire you to apply for one of these great roles.

ABOUT YGAM

We are the Young Gamblers Education Trust known as YGAM!

We are a registered charity (1162425) and Company Limited by Guarantee (09189998) and have established a wholly owned subsidiary trading arm, YGAM Innovation Limited (10360250).’

Why YGAM

Gambling and gaming are everywhere, and young people are touched by them daily in their lives. They walk past betting shops, billboards, buy lottery tickets or scratchcards, and see gambling companies sponsoring major sporting events every day. On their mobile phones they have access, not only to traditional betting and casino-style gambling, but also to social games with a gambling element. Gaming and social media interaction have become part of everyday life for millions of young people and being ‘connected’ is an important part of their life and culture.  With emerging concerns about the effect of device and online time on the wellbeing and safety of young or vulnerable people, the gambling and gaming context is complex.

While many people – the majority – enjoy gambling and gaming as social activities, for others it can become an addiction; contributing to a mental health condition, isolation, creating huge financial pressure and hardship, and in some cases destroying young lives, and those of their families and people around them.

It is against this context, and the personal experience of our founders and many people who have now come into contact with YGAM, that we have a clear social purpose to inform, educate and safeguard young people against problematic gambling or social gaming.

Our Social Purpose

We approach our social purpose in three main ways:

  • Enhance Understanding
YGAM aims to enhance the UK’s understanding of gambling, gaming and related harm, specifically amongst young and vulnerable people.
  • Help Young and Vulnerable People
YGAM helps young people make informed choices through better understanding of gambling, gaming and their potential risks.
  • Increase Awareness
YGAM increases awareness of youth gambling and gaming as a public health issue with policy-makers, educators, the industries themselves and key influencers.

Our Services

In practice this means we deliver:

  • Practitioner Workshops

We run training and education programmes supporting teachers and practitioners to deliver our programme directly to young people. This is the most established part of our work engaging hundreds of practitioners, youth workers and teachers every year and reaching thousands of young people. Our resources are subject to external scrutiny, quality-assurance and verification. This external rigour delivers more informed YGAM products, that are relevant and easily adopted by those who share our commitment in reducing gambling and gaming related harm in a professional and educationally robust manor. YGAM is proud to be approved by the Ofqual awarding body, ASDAN, our educational resources are further strengthened by the PSHE Association’s quality-assurance mark and in October 2017 we achieved the prestigious Pearson Assured quality-mark. Everyone who attends our workshops, which are funded so that they are free to educators and practitioners, then has access to the YGAM on-line Academy which provides almost 200 downloadable educational resources to help organisations deliver the YGAM programme to young people. All these resources are accredited and externally quality-assured. We have recently appointed our first permanent Head of Delivery, Education who will grow this offer to work with over 4,400 education organisations in the next 3 years.

  • Peer Education Projects

Working in partnership with universities, YGAM trains year 2 and year 3 students to become YGAM peer mentors. Trained peer mentors are then employed part-time to deliver a range of gambling and gaming related harm prevention programmes and awareness campaigns within their universities and local communities. We have just appointed our first permanent Head of Education Delivery, University & Student Engagement who will grow this offer to work with over 50 universities in the next 3 years.

  • Research

Through the delivery of our education programmes, a programme of research into the attitudes, thinking and behaviours of young people in relation to gambling and social gaming will be created to establish a global research network, specifically targeting teenagers and young adults. Additionally, YGAM will work with our research partners to undertake both qualitative and quantitative research into the effectiveness and impact of the YGAM products.  Now our two education programmes are established and we have strong cohorts of young people and practitioners who have completed the programmes, this area of our work is ready to be developed.

YGAM Innovation

YGAM Innovation is the UK’s first socially driven training organisation for the gambling & gaming sector. It is wholly owned by YGAM and all our profits are donated to the charity. As the work of YGAM the charity has developed, the opportunity to support people working in the gambling & gaming industry, public health, or licensing authorities is gaining momentum. They want to learn more about or minimise gambling or gaming-related harm amongst their customers, clients, or the general public. In response we have created, delivered and evaluated bespoke qualification training with support from Pearson at Levels 2. Our aim is to grow the levels of Pearson qualifications to Level 5 over the next three years.

Additionally, YGAM Innovation is seeking to work with the gambling and gaming industry specifically to form a Government Approved Trailblazer Group. This Group will create a new Apprenticeship Standard for the gambling and gaming industry, allowing operators to gain value from the Apprenticeship Levy. 100% of all profits generated by YGAM Innovation are donated to YGAM to enable the charity to diversify and build unrestricted income, which will be spent to increase its social impact and reach.

about the roles

Young Gamblers Education Trust (YGAM)

Independent Trustees – YGAM Board
Non-executive Chair and Non-executive Directors – YGAM Innovation Board
Meetings held in London with reasonable expenses reimbursed.

In an age where you can gamble or game within a few clicks of an app, how can we educate young people about safer gambling and gaming?

Gambling and gaming are everywhere, and young people are touched by them daily in their lives. Betting shops are located on almost every high street, casinos are open day and night, and gambling-related sponsorship is emblazoned on sporting kits every day. On their mobile phones they have access, not only to traditional betting and casino-style gambling, but also to social games with a gambling element. Gaming and social media interaction have become part of everyday life for millions of young people and being ‘connected’ is an important part of their life and culture. The opportunity and temptation has never been stronger and whilst many people enjoy gaming and gambling safely, for others it can become a terrible addiction which affects our finances, our mental health, our relationships, our entire lives.

The Young Gamblers Education Trust (YGAM) exists as an independent charity with a social purpose to inform, educate and safeguard young people against problematic gambling & social gaming.

We deliver accredited training to teachers, youth workers, community mental health colleagues, prison & probation colleagues and community volunteers, to enable them to deliver the YGAM gambling-related harm-prevention programme. We have created Peer Education Projects working with universities to train students to become YGAM Peer mentors who then deliver programmes and awareness campaigns in their universities and communities. Through our training programmes and workshops, we are looking to create and establish a global research network which can provide research into the attitudes, thinking and behaviours of young people and gambling / social gaming and research the impact of YGAM products.

From an idea on a sheet of paper in 2015, to achieving over £1.2m in funding, YGAM’s growth to date has been impressive. This has proven the need and appetite for our work. Our ambition is to become the leading international organisation on minimising gambling and gaming-related harm among young people, through preventative, quality-assured and internationally recognised accredited education.

YGAM’s charity Board is looking for new Trustees, including a Chair of our People & Transformation Committee, with experience of organisational development and human resources, experience of the gaming industry, corporate fundraisers or people with expertise in post 16 education and training.

YGAM established YGAM Innovation Limited in 2017. We did this initially in response to an invitation to work even closer with the gambling and gaming industries, public health, local authorities, and the criminal justice sector. We were asked to develop, pilot, and evaluate accredited training programmes, aimed at staff working on the front line to raise awareness around gambling & gaming-related harm. Further opportunities for services and accredited education offers to the industry mean the trading arm is now developing at a fast pace and we want to further professionalise the Trading Board.

YGAM Innovation, is also looking for a number of new Non-Executive Directors including a new Chair to lead our Board, and people with backgrounds in the private independent training sector, the education sector and those who have previous experience in the gambling or gaming sectors.

Strong commercial acumen and an understanding of trading/income generation in social purpose context would also be invaluable as the work of the trading company takes off. YGAM Innovation is a genuine start-up organisation, so some hands-on leadership will be needed.

We want people who are thought leaders, innovative and passionate about educating people about the harm that gambling can cause.
