Thank you for your interest in the position of Director of Human Resources at VoiceAbility. This is an exciting time for the successful applicant to join us, as we strengthen the organisation to continue to respond to the requirements of people with whom we work alongside. The post-holder will be an integral member of the executive management team and play a key role in shaping the future of the charity and the positive impact we have on people’s lives.
VoiceAbility supports disabled people and people who face disadvantage or discrimination to have a voice that counts. We lead work to ensure that people are supported to have control over their lives and we have pioneered ways of enabling people to be heard and have their rights respected. We put the people we work with at the heart of our organisation and have developed excellent services. As a result, we have become one of the largest providers of advocacy and user participation services in the UK.
Our strategy is aimed at ensuring we continue to improve what we do, achieve greater social impact, and operate more effectively and efficiently. As we continue to operate in a challenging and competitive environment our focus is on driving sustainability, together with diversifying our services in order to meet our social mission more fully.
To meet some of these challenges we’re now looking for a progressive, customer-focused and commercially orientated HR professional and leader. You will champion the design and delivery of best practice HR and L&D interventions and continue to shape our HR function, so it is fully aligned to delivering on our organisational needs, and those of the people who use and work in our services.
This is an important role and one that will contribute to ongoing organisational development and both engage and enable our people, drive high performance and our focus on service excellence.
I’m personally looking for someone who will bring a deep understanding of how our ability to deliver on our social mission can be driven by our people strategies. I want to find a leader who has absolute empathy with what we do and why and who has a leadership and management style which inspires and enables people to be their best. We’re an ambitious organisation, so this post needs to be filled by someone who isn’t fazed by multiple demands, but instead see these as an opportunity to identify where the greatest difference can be made and then to lead that change.

VoiceAbility’s mission is to strengthen voices, support rights and change lives. We enable people who face the greatest disadvantage and discrimination to have a real say in, and genuine control over, their lives. We provide independent support to people with learning disabilities, mental health issues, physical and sensory impairments or autism and to children, young people and people with dementia.
We have a turnover of c£8.5m, employing 320 staff across the UK and put the people we work with at the heart of our organisation. Last year we supported over 30,000 people, which makes us one of the largest providers of advocacy and user participation services in the UK.
In view of the increasingly challenging environment for people who use social care and long-term health services, we want to achieve more. To achieve this our strategy sets our direction to improve what we do, achieve greater social impact and operate more productively and effectively. Our focus is on driving sustainability and on developing new service directions.
We now need a progressive and customer focused Director of HR to help us to deliver our growth plans and continue to develop our strategic HR function to meet the needs of an evolving organisation. Providing leadership to our people management practices, and aligning these to our ethos, culture and strategy, you will work in partnership with the Chief Executive, Executive Management Team and Board, and our committed staff teams to ensure we maintain focus and energy on delivering our strategic objectives.
Our successful candidate will be CIPD qualified and bring considerable HR leadership experience gained in the public, private or not for profit sectors. Commercially minded with a broad generalist background, you are also likely to have comprehensive knowledge and experience of TUPE, and experience in learning & development, employee engagement and pay & reward. Flexible and solution-oriented you will be comfortable working at all levels. With strong interpersonal skills and an ability to manage and prioritise multiple objectives, you will also be able to lead a highly committed team, challenge existing approaches in a constructive way, and develop new ideas to help improve performance and continue to engage our people.
