Welcome from tony harrop obe, present chair of trustees

Dear Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in Action Homeless and for considering applying to become our new Chair.

Action Homeless is the leading and largest charity responding to the needs of homeless people in Leicester and Leicestershire. We are an ambitious, well-governed and sustainable organisation with skilled and motivated staff and volunteers. We provide extensive high quality accommodation and services already and are just about to embark on some exciting new projects.

We are committed to deliver our mission of ensuring that no one has to sleep on the streets of Leicestershire. We focus on preventing people ending up on those streets in the first place but if they do, we aim to get them support, accommodation and homes appropriate to their needs as quickly as possible.

The growing shortage of affordable housing coupled with the effect of welfare reforms means that more people than ever are seeking our support. Included in this microsite you will find information of what we have achieved already and the scale of the services we provide.

Our Board recently agreed a new Strategic Plan for 2018-23 based on “Housing First” principles. This includes embarking on a very exciting project to acquire a hostel presently owned by a housing association and reconfiguring to provide accommodation based on those principles.

Action Homeless has a skilled and committed CEO, executive team and staff and is supported by volunteers all the year round. We work in productive partnership with, amongst others, the City and local councils, the NHS, other voluntary organisations and financial institutions. Last year our revenue income was over £2.3 million and we have very sound reserves.

The Chair is supported by a diverse, knowledgeable and enthusiastic Board of Trustees who are equally committed to delivering our vision and to ensuring we provide sound and proper governance. We have recently appointed two new trustees, one of whom will be our new Treasurer.

The Chair will work closely with the CEO and the Board to deliver our plans and help shape the future direction of Action Homeless.

You will share our passion to deliver high quality accommodation, homes and support to people who have experienced the dreadful effects of being homeless.

I am stepping back from the Chair role after 4 very productive and personally satisfying years. I will remain a trustee and will do all I can to ease the new Chair into the role, without stepping on their toes!

I want to encourage you to consider taking on this important and fulfilling role and to joining us in further developing the range and quality of our services. I hope you will find the information helpful. Thank You.

Tony Harrop

ABOUT Action Homeless

Action Homeless is a thriving local charity and social enterprise committed to improving the lives of people affected by homelessness. We have been based in Leicester for over forty years and help individuals and families from across the city and county. Last year alone, we provided emergency housing and specialist support to over 400 people.

Our approach to tackling homelessness goes beyond providing a roof (although we do recognise this as a vital first step). Everyone that walks through one of our front doors has access to a wide range of services which aim to tackle the causes and consequences of their homelessness. Our expert team of staff and volunteers work hard to ensure people leave Action Homeless with somewhere to call home and the skills and means to maintain their independence.

First and foremost, Action Homeless offer accommodation to people and families in housing crisis.

Our housing projects are arranged in three tiers with varying levels of support;

1. Crisis accommodation

We provide emergency housing to single people in crisis from three sites in Leicester (Mayfield House, The Hollies and Jarvis House). Our crisis accommodation is designed to help those who have multiple and complex needs and therefore require intensive support to help them to prepare for independent living. Referrals to this service can be made via the Local Authority’s Single Access Referral Scheme (SARS). Rough sleepers can access emergency beds at Mayfield House. We can also refer you onto the No Second Night Out Leicestershire pathway. Please contact Action Homeless for further information and advice about NSNO.

For women and children fleeing domestic abuse or in housing crisis, our Bridge House project offers a safe and secure place to stay along with specialist support to help women to overcome trauma and prepare for independent living.

2. Accommodation Assist

Our second stage offer is high quality temporary housing for people who are homeless or threatened with homelessness and need a safe place to live whilst identifying more stable and permanent housing. Our accommodation across Leicester varies to include small shared houses, bedsits and self-contained flats. This accommodation is suitable for individuals and couples who still need a low level of support but have a degree of independence and are largely able to manage their own lives on a day to day basis.

3. Accommodation Plus

Finally, Accommodation Plus offers longer term homes to people who are independent but may benefit from the social aspect of communal living. Our Accommodation Plus properties range from shared houses, self-contained flats to family homes. With Action Homeless acting as the landlord, tenants benefit from the stability and security of having somewhere to call home for as long as they want it.

Building Blocks

Funded by BBC Children in Need, Building Blocks is an Action Homeless project for very young children affected by homelessness. It offers play groups, family trips and parenting support for families with children aged 0-4 years who have been affected by homelessness. Play sessions take place at various locations across Leicester and are open to any children who’ve experienced homelessness or unsettled housing situations.

Board of Trustees
As a charity, we are governed by a Board of Trustees who bring a wealth of experience and broad range of skills which enable them to provide strong strategic leadership to Action Homeless. For individual biographies please click here

Recently we have appointed Claire Hurst as our new Treasurer. Claire Joined the Board in October 2017 and lives in Leicestershire. She has a long background in financial services and currently works as a personal adviser within Nat West Bank’s Private Banking division. She has a long involvement with a number of charities, including the British Red Cross, the Samaritans, Zoe’s Place Hospice and the Money Sense Programme.

about the role

Action Homeless
Un-remunerated with reasonable expenses

Action Homeless is the largest homeless charity working in Leicester and Leicestershire and every night we house 150 people who experience homelessness. We aim to give our clients the best possible service, providing accommodation for those in crisis, tailored support to help them overcome any issues and long-term housing to foster independence. We also provide training, volunteering and employment opportunities through our social enterprise trust, Action Trust.

With a strong track record of success, we have helped over 20,000 people in Leicester who have been affected by homelessness and 95% of our clients move into their own homes once they leave our service. We are an ambitious and client-centred organisation, respected for our expertise and the high-quality accommodation and services we offer but we want to do more. As we embark on our next strategy, focusing on ‘Housing First’ principles, we now seek a new Chair to lead and deliver our plans and shape our exciting future direction.

To help us achieve our aims we’re looking for our ideal candidate to possess a strategic track record of delivering growth and development in their field.   Commercially savvy with the ability to help us to effectively evaluate and assess risk your experience will also help us consider new sources of funding and financial modelling to enable us to purchase and renovate more properties. Preferably experienced as a trustee, and perhaps an existing Chair, you will be equipped with the skills to get the best out of the board & stimulate modern and progressive governance.

As we embark on a bold and ambitious strategy we seek a similarly bold and ambitious Chair who shares our commitment to effectively tackling homelessness and enabling our clients to achieve independent living.
